TAE KWON DO BLOCKING TECHNIQUES

Tae Kwon Do has many defnsive blocking techniques. The most fundemental are presented here. Usually (but not always) the block is made with the "hard part" of the inner and outer forearm. It is important to remember that the power in all TKD techniques originates from the HIPS and not the shoulders, this way we can utilize the strength from our entire body in the blocking techniques.

INNER MIDDLE SECTION BLOCK

Begin with blocking hand raised to the ear. Swing arm directly across body and stop at the centre of the chest, twisting the wrist at the final moment. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

OUTER MIDDLE SECTION BLOCK
(montong bakat makki)
Begin with blocking hand raised to the opposite ear. Swing arm directly across body and stop at the opposite shopulder, twisting the wrist at the final moment. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

HIGH SECTION BLOCK

Begin with blocking hand at opposite hip. Crossing the arms across body, bring the blocking hand up and slightly forward, twisting the wrist at the final moment. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

LOW SECTION BLOCK

Begin with blocking hand raised to the opposite ear. Swing arm directly across body and stop just above the knee, twisting the wrist at the final moment. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

PALM HEEL BLOCK

Begin with blocking hand at the hip. Move arm directly across body and stop at the centre of the chest, blocking with the lower palm area. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip

X- BLOCK

Begin with blocking hands on the hips. Move arms directly across body above head in a cutting action to make the X-shape blocking with outside hard parts of wrist. This block can be performed for high section or low section

DOUBLE KNIFE HAND BLOCK
(double sonnal makki)

This is an augmented double block. Begin with blocking hands stretched out behind body. Move arms directly forwards across body. the blocking hand stops by the outside shoulder blocking with the outside part of the forearm and the supporting hand by the chest.
